Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian community in the US city of Houston and environs, supported by the local Indonesian consulate general, organized a charity bazaar to raise funds for victims of natural disasters at home.
The bazaar to help victims of the Wasior flash flood, the Mentawai earthquake and tsunami, and the Mt Merapi eruptions in Central Java was held on the premises of the Indonesian consulate general on Saturday (Nov 13), according to Indonesian Consul General in Houston Al Busyra Basnur in an e-mailed message to ANTARA News Monday.
The event attracted around 1,000 people, both Indonesians and Americans, especially those grouped in "Friends of Indonesia."
The bazaar managed to collect donations amounting to US$20,204 which would be sent to Indonesia.
Consul General Al Busyra Basnur in his opening remarks expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Indonesian community in Houston and surrounding areas for their concern and efforts to help disaster victims in Indonesia.
"Every person participating in this charity bazaar - every woman, man, youngster and child - is a hero, a humanitarian hero," Al Busyra Basnur said.
Meanwhile, Paul Wahyudin, chairman of the bazaar organizing committee, said that he was very proud that diverse Indonesian community in Houston could unite to help those affected by natural disasters in Indonesia.
The Indonesian community in Houston comprise, among others, members of ICMI (Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Assocation), Islamic Family Academy (IFA), IMSA (Indonesian Muslim Society in America), ISRANA (Indonesian Scholarship and Relief Assistance of North America), HIBA (Houston Indonesian Buddhist Association), BKKIH (Indonesian Christians in Houston), Minang people, Pasundan people, and mixed-couples.
The goods on offer to visitors to the bazaar included a wide range of ndonesian foods, beverages, handicraft articles and garments.
Visitors were entertained with `angklung` (bamboo percussion instrument)music , and were also invited to visit an Indonesian Cultural Center in the Indonesian Consulate General building.
